Energy Minister, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has urged Ghanaians to brace themselves for a more severe power fluctuation in the Greater Accra Region from next month (May 2021).

This is Because the Millennium Development Authority (MDA) has served notice of an intended work on the Kasoa - Pokuase substations.

"Just two days ago, I received a letter from the Millennium Development Authority (MDA), [the company which is helping with the upgrade of the Pokuase and Kasoa substations], informing me in May, there is going to be systematic power outages".

He revealed this during a stakeholder's engagement on the current power situation under the auspices of civil society organizations on Thursday, 7th April 2021, in Accra.

The Manhyia South Legislator explained it was appropriate to invite power generation and distribution agencies to put their heads together and inform the public to enable them to plan.

"We have invited ECG (Electricity Company of Ghana) and GRIDCo (Ghana Grid Company Limited) that in the light of this information, we sit and plan and communicate with the people who will be affected way before it happens".

Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, revealed the lines in question since installation well over 60 years ago have yet to be replaced, hence the need for the planned works.

"These the lines that we have just been informed about were strung in the 50s and 60s. The power it was supposed to transmit to Accra has increased tremendously due to the expansion of Accra, yet the lines have remained the same. They are now giving us lines that can improve the power situation in Accra".
