An Accra High Court has turned down a request from Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, for additional evidence from prosecutors. Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, is facing charges related to illegal mining.
At Monday's hearing, Wontumi's legal team argued that the prosecution's case references a property deed or agreement. His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, stated they needed copies of these documents to prepare a proper defence.
The Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, opposed the motion. He informed the Court that the state does not have these documents and that the charges do not depend on them.
Presiding Judge Audrey Kocuvie-Tay dismissed the application after considering arguments from both sides.
Speaking outside the Court, Lawyer Appiah-Kubi clarified the defense's position. He said the motion aimed to compel the prosecution to provide any assignment documents allegedly signed by Wontumi or his mining company.
He contends the Attorney General's case suggests such a document exists, while the prosecution denies having it.
The case accuses Chairman Wontumi of allowing unauthorized mining on his concession at Samreboi. The trial will now proceed to a Case Management Conference scheduled for Monday, December 15, 2025.
