Ghana is Blacklisted From Using PayPal Due to Fraud - Sam George

The Minister of Communication, Samuel Nartey George, remarks that widespread online fraud is preventing Ghanaians from accessing monetization features on major global platforms.

Addressing the public criticism over the government's crackdown on cybercrime. Sam George connected this activity directly to Ghana's exclusion from earning features on services like PayPal, TikTok, and Meta (Facebook and Instagram).

Minister George clarified that fraudulent actions by a few have severe effects on the broader digital economy. He cited PayPal's complete exit from the Ghanaian market years ago as a direct result of fraud.

"Those who tell us to leave the 'fraud boys' alone are the same people asking why we cannot monetize on these international platforms," George said. "The answer is clear. Ghana will remain blocked as long as this fraud persists."

He highlighted that the illegal activities of a few people undermine legitimate online work. This includes content creators and others who rely on digital platforms for income.

"The actions of a few deprive the majority who are working legitimately. They give Ghana a bad name, which is why many cannot get value for their craft online. We have no choice but to take action," the minister stated.

He declared that the government's campaign against cybercrime will continue. This effort, he argued, is essential to rebuild trust with international tech companies.

"Fighting cybercrime helps us present Ghana as a safe and secure digital destination. It gives companies like TikTok and Facebook the confidence to engage with us on monetization for our citizens," George added.

The minister's comments highlight the government's position that combating fraud is a critical step toward unlocking digital economic opportunities for all Ghanaians.
